How to prepare for your ceramics workshop

First time in the studio? Whether you are joining a workshop, a course or using a gift card, this guide will help you arrive relaxed and well prepared.

How do I find the studio?

    • S.K. Műhely is on Sas-hegy, in the grounds of Arany János Elementary School and Gymnasium, in a separate building within a large garden where it is easy to get lost.
    • Please follow these directions so you can easily find the “treasure” – the studio 😊
    • Walk up Sion lépcső and enter through the open gate on the left-hand side.
    • You will see a sports hall in front of you – do not go inside. Instead, walk to the right of it and go up the concrete garden stairs.
    • At the top you will find a one-storey grey building on the left. Go up the metal-railed stairs and at the end of the ground-floor corridor you will find the CERAMICS STUDIO.

    Parking

    • Parking in the surrounding area is free of charge.
    • Sion lépcső is a dead-end street where you can also park.

    What to wear

    • We provide aprons.
    • If you are coming for a wheel-throwing session, please keep in mind that liquid clay can splash.
    • Of course, clay washes out, but it is best to wear clothes you do not mind getting a bit messy.

    What to bring

    • You do not need to bring anything – we provide all tools and aprons.

When can I take my pieces home?

    • You can take your pieces home about 4 weeks after the date of your session.
    • You can collect them during workshop hours.
    • At the start of a class the teacher is very busy, so if you are only coming to collect pieces, please arrive at least half an hour after the class begins.
    • We need around 4 weeks because the clay must dry completely before we can place it in the kiln for the first (bisque) firing.
    • If pieces go into the kiln while still wet, the water inside boils at around 100°C and the piece can explode.
    • After bisque firing we dip the pieces into the agreed glaze, wipe the glaze off the base so they do not stick to the kiln shelf, and then they go into the second (glaze) firing.
    • After many workshops we also sponge and retouch each piece so that the surface is smooth and free of sharp edges or heavy fingerprints – this takes time, which is why the waiting period is necessary.

If I cannot come back within 4 weeks

    • We store finished pieces in boxes in the studio for about 2 months.
    • Because our storage space is limited, after that they are moved to a shelf in the corridor where they are no longer actively supervised.
    • Later they may be sold at a charity sale or given away as gifts.

    Lockers and valuables

    • We do not have individual lockable lockers, and the changing area is in a different room from where we work.
    • Please keep valuable rings, watches, phones, etc. with you or in your pocket; we cannot take responsibility for personal belongings (so far, everything left behind has been found).

Can I work with long gel nails?

    • If your nails are very long, they will get in the way, especially during wheel-throwing, so we do not recommend it.

    Can I bring my child?

    • Children from around 10 years of age can join adult sessions if they come with a parent.
    • They need their own booked place in the workshop.

From what age is wheel-throwing recommended for children?

    • It depends on the child’s physical strength and ability to concentrate, but in general we do not recommend wheel-throwing under the age of 13.
    • In children’s courses we do not normally use the wheel, only once per term at most.

    Can I bring my dog?

    • We are dog-friendly and dogs do sometimes come along with their owners to regular pass-holder classes, with the prior agreement of the group.
    • For workshops, we kindly ask you to leave your dog at home, as some participants may not be comfortable with them.
